ICBA, ABA, CUNA, State Banking Associations All United in Opposition to Harmful Credit Card Routing Legislation

| American Bankers Association

Proposed credit card routing legislation is opposed by every community bank, credit union, and state banking association in America.

EPC Executive Director Aaron Stetter

WASHINGTON, DC — Recently, a coalition of state banking and community bank associations led by the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) sent a letter to Congress urging members to oppose proposed credit card routing legislation (S. 1838/H.R. 3881).

In a joint letter to lawmakers, ICBA and its state partners said, “the bill would force an overhaul of the payments landscape at a significant cost to consumers and the community banks that serve them. This would drive community banks away from card issuance, solely to benefit big-box merchants such as Amazon and Walmart.”

You can read ICBA’s letter press release about the letter HERE.

The ICBA letter follows similar letters led by the American Bankers Association (ABA) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) to Congressional leaders calling on lawmakers to oppose credit card routing legislation (S. 1838/H.R. 3881).

The full ABA letter can be found HERE. The full CUNA letter can be found HERE.

In response to these letters, EPC Executive Director Aaron Stetter noted that “every credit union, community bank, and banking association in America has come out in opposition to proposed credit card routing legislation.”

In total, this banking coalition represents nearly 4,800 community bank charters, across nearly 50,000 branches as well as more than 4,800 credit union charters with nearly 22,000 headquarters, branches, and other locations representing over 135 million Americans.
