Merchant groups like to claim that interchange fees have increased substantially in recent years, but that assertion is purposely misleading. Merchants have paid more in total interchange only because they are using electronic payments to grow their revenue and increase their sales. In fact, interchange rates have stayed essentially flat—only the volume of transactions has changed.
